As usual, the films are made by outstanding documentary film-makers and come complete with English-language subtitles.
Dinārs is a Latvian schlager singer popular with the ladies and known for his big cat mane. The eponymous film follows his path over a turbulent season of work.
Director Mārtiņš Grauds relates an amusing back-and-forth with the singer, who actually was the one to pitch the idea to document his life.
"Producer Uldis Cekulis suggested I maybe try talking Dinārs into cutting his hair for the end of the movie, but after the first [disastrous] conversation I didn't raise the issue anymore. [...] Uldis told me, if Dinārs was the one to address me, he should sacrifice something as well. After the first shooting, Dinārs sent me a picture in which his hair was slicked down. It was a shock for me for several seconds, as in, damn, he's cut his hair without telling me. But that was the impression he wanted to leave by sending the picture."
