Outdoor pianos return to Jūrmala

Take note – story published 4 years ago

June 13 saw the opening of outdoor pianos in the neighbourhood of Dzintari, Jūrmala. The three musical instruments, decorated by artists and made for public use, are placed in three different places, which is one place more than last year, reported LSM's Latvian language service.

The new piano, designed with the theme “Apple” in mind, is situated in the Dubulti Cultural Quarter, beneath the historil apple tree, which has survived since the time when the apple garden of Ludis Bērziņš and Fricis Šmithen's gymnasium was part of the quarter. The authors of the piano's design are the pupils of the Jūrmala Art School.

The second piano, on which the artist Agnese Bule depicted an theme of seafaring, is located near the Bulduri exhibition house. The design of the third piano, however, placed at the end of Turaidas iela near the sea, was reworked by the artists Dace Ziemele and Māra Mozgire as part of the opening on June 13.

Their idea was to create a “Colorful River for Music”. The open-air pianos will be available until the end of summer, as long as the conditions of the instruments and the weather are permitting. Upon noticing any damage being done to the pianos, the municipality urges witnesses to reprimand and report the malefactors, and also to cover the instrument with a tarpaulin attached to its back when it is raining.
