On Monday, January 9, applications will open for free Latvian language courses supported by the Rīga municipality, the Riga City Council said January 6.

The courses can be attended by those who have declared their place of residence in Rīga, as well as by Ukrainian civilians who live in Rīga and can attend courses organized by the Riga municipality. Courses are available to adult residents of Rīga, with the exception of pupils and the unemployed. Language learning will be provided at A and B levels.

Information (in Russian, English and Latvian) on the application, including contacts and lists of educational establishments, will be available on the “apkaimes.lv” website, under Integrācija -> Latviešu valodas kursi.

Rīga residents will be able to choose the language learning location according to the list to be published Monday. The application is made by contacting the selected educational institution, either electronically or by the specified telephone.

The local government has been implementing the project competition since 2010, in which funding is granted to educational institutions for ensuring the acquisition of the Latvian language for adult residents of Rīga. Since 2010, more than 14,000 Rīga inhabitants have completed the course.

This year, the competition supports four projects for a total of €98,605.44.
