The Latvian capital, Riga, attracted a record number of revellers to its city festival over August 14-16 according to the municipal marketing department.

Citing figures provided by the state police, officials claimed that more than 300,000 people had turned out to enjoy an extensive program of cultural and commercial events.

On Saturday alone 200,000 visitors were estimated.

Overall, Riga residents and guests had the opportunity to attend and participate in more than 80 different events throughout the city.

Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs expressed his gratitude to all artists, festival organizers, police and utility workers for their help in making the festival a success and a suitable way to mark the city's 814th birthday.

"We have a new record," he tweeted triumphantly on Saturday, linking also to a news story claiming that "during the city festival, smiles never disappear from the faces of Riga's population."
