Anyone let down by cloudy weather preventing a satisfactory viewing of today’s solar eclipse can seek comfort in the LSM culture editors’ entertainment picks this weekend.

I am Liepāja  - concert extravaganza

The city by the sea in Kurzeme province is hosting its 390th anniversary founding celebrations on March 20 and 21. A grand concert is planned to welcome all to the festivities titled “I am Liepāja”, featuring a cavalcade of classical, rock and traditional folk music stars and groups who are native sons and daughters of the ‘town where the wind is born’.


Namejs   - a cinematic symphony about the Ancient Semigallian chief

Composer and percussion master Rihards Zaļupe premieres his symphony ‘Namejs’ Friday evening at the Great Guild Hall, dedicated to the legend of the leader of the Semigallian tribes who valiantly stood against the crusading Order of the Brothers of the Sword in the 13th century. Conductor Guntis Kuzma will lead the National Symphony Orchestra in rendering the cinematic work by the rising young star, based on the 1962 historical novel “The Burning Castle-Mound” by Laimonis Pūris.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest   - theatre production

Ken Kesey’s tragicomedy will premiere at the Dailes Theatre with a stellar cast led by Artūrs Skrastiņš in the title role on Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22.


Cēsis offers   - French jazz violin master and Latvian gypsy bard

Two outstanding musical artists are visiting Cēsis this weekend, where French progressive violin pioneer Didier Lockwood will fill in Friday evening for the ailing Gidon Kremer together with the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra at the Vidzeme Concert Hall.

On Saturday night Latvia’s unique trembling-falsetto and raspy-growling bard and native son of Cēsis Haralds Sīmanis will perform at the Fonoklubs venue there at 21:00

Stalwart men’s choirs gather in Jūrmala  - vocal groups compete

On Saturday the 2nd Annual Contest of Latvian men’s vocal ensembles descends upon the Gulf of Riga resort suburb, where ladies, gents, boys and girls are welcome to come watch and listen to the nineteen competing groups free of charge at the Jūrmala Cultural Center Saturday, March 21 beginning at noon.
