Tennis team succumbs to Bulgaria as Jūrmala hosts Davis Cup

Jūrmala’s tennis center Lielupe hosted the Davis Cup’s Zonal Group II of the Europe/Africa region this weekend, but the home court advantage didn’t help Latvia’s team against Bulgaria, who defeated the hosts handily 4-1, crushing any local hopes for a tennis triumph this year.

On the center’s hard-indoor surface, only Mārtiņš Podžus managed to overpower Aleksander Lazov on Friday in the singles sets, while his brother Jānis Podžus relinquished his set to Dimitar Kuzmanov the same day.

On Saturday the brothers lost to Tihomir Grozdanov and Ilia Kushev in the doubles set.

During Sunday’s reverse singles set Kuzmnaov defeated Mārtiņš Podžus, leaving Latvia ranked 42nd in the Davis Cup lists against Bulgaria in 63rd position.

Last year Latvia slipped from the Zonal Group I category to Zonal Group II and must now face Madagascar in July to hold on to its current level, while Bulgaria moves on to face Luxembourg.
