The birds are heading home

Take note – story published 9 years ago

It may not mean much in other countries, but in Latvia it's a big deal. With everyone keen to see the first signs of Spring's arrival, there is no more reliable sign that sunny days are around the corner than the return of the country's favorite migratory birds.

In recent days, bird watchers have spotted several arrivals according to the bird-watcher's website Latvijasputni.lv (English webpage available).

Birds logged so far include Tundra and Whooper Swans, various Geese, Skylarks, Lapwings, Northern Harriers, Reed Buntings and Northern Hawk Owls.

But all eyes remain peeled for the most loved of all Latvian birds, the storks and cranes whose return is always a source of pleasure and the surest sign of Spring's arrival - and perhaps even good luck for the year ahead.
