Three for the Christmas Weekend

Take note – story published 7 years ago

While most Latvians will spend Christmas at home with their families, there are still things to do and see in the country if you're here for the most silent time of the year.

Celebrating Ella Fitzgerald in Old Rīga

The big band of the Rīga orchestra with local jazz divas will on the evenings of December 23 and December 26 perform pieces by the Ella Fitzgerald, often dubbed First Lady of jazz.

"My inner goal is not trying to copy or portray Ella - that's impossible - bur rather to honor her," said Ieva Kerēvica, who'll be performing pieces by Fitzgerald together with soloists Ilona Bagele, Rūta Dūduma, Evilena Protektore, and Roberts Memmēns.

Of course, Fitzgerald's numerous Christmas songs will make up the bulk of the concert.

Tickets are still available for both concerts.

With Love to Alex Katz

The dainty Māksla XO gallery will show a solo exhibition by Helena Heinriksone titled "I Love You. Tribute to Alex Katz".

The paintings feature lovers and are Heinriksone's way of showing deference to American painter Alex Katz, whom she met and got to know during art fairs in Europe.

If you don't make it to the exhibition by January 17 when it moves, it will feature at the Art Madrid 2017 exhibition as well.

Christmas fairs in Old Rīga

The Doma Square in Old Rīga is home to the annual Christmas fair that offers plenty of fun and things to do and of course - buy, buy, buy - right in the heart of the Old Town.

It'll be one of the few places open for business on Christmas and a perfect place to stock up on souvenirs, cinnamon and mulled wine.
