Three for the Weekend in Latvia: Health, birds, cinema

Another trio of happenings to see you through the first weekend of October.

Healthy lifestyle day

Vērmanes dārzā notiek Starptautiskajai bērnu aizsardzības dienai veltīts pasākums

From 11:00 until 17:00 on October 5, lovely Vērmanes park in the center of Rīga becomes the scene for 'Healthy lifestyle day'. Visitors will have the opportunity to conduct preventive health screenings and receive advice from health professionals. There will also be exciting orienteering games and family relay competitions for children, their parents and seniors. You will be able to test your strength by participating in a basketball competition, playing crossminton (No, we hadn't heard of it, either), mcroquet and other sports. For smaller ones there are inflatable attractions, plus musical performances, dances, contests and prizes. Participation in all activities is free of charge.

Bird days at Ķemeri

While hundreds of people are likely to be heading in the direction of Sigulda to look at the spectacular leaf colors, head in the opposite direction towards Ķemeri for trees that are just as impressive with the added attraction of birds in them! October 5 and 6 are designated Bird Days at the Forest House in Ķemeri, with special trips laid on to nearby Lake Kaņieris and Dunduri meadows, bith of which are rich in bird life. For some birds such as geese it will also be a last chance to bid them farewell as they head south for the winter.

Go see Oļegs

2019 is turning out to be a very good year for Latvian film, with directors producing high quality material in a variety of different genres. Oļegs is not for the faint-hearted or for younger audiences, but tells an important if brutal tale of exploitation and desperation through the eyes of Oļeg, a Russian-speaking "non-citizen" from Latvia working abroad but finding himself trapped in an increasingly serious set of circumstances. It opened in Latvia on October 4 after attracting considerable praise in international competition, so be among the first to see it here by heading towards your nearest silver screen.
