Three for the Weekend: Jazz, sauna festival and art

Take note – story published 6 years ago

This weekend's top things to see and do: a jazz festival, a sauna festival and an exhibition of Maija Tabaka's lively artworks about Berlin.

Saulkrasti Jazz

The 20th Saulkrasti Jazz festival is seeing the sunny seaside town of Saulkrasti all but bursting with skillful musicians. One of the highlights this year is Jimmy Dludlu from Mozambique, whom organizers describe as "particularly drawn to the sounds of west and central Africa, as well as Latin America" while jazz remains his first love.

He'll be performing at Saulkrasti on Saturday at 9 p.m.

Sauna festival

You don't have to be working hard to sweat as you can just enter a sauna. From July 21 to 23 the first-ever Sauna festival will take place in Ozolaine in eastern Latvia. The program features going to the sauna, doing workshops with kids and more. Read more here (Latvian).

West Berlin in the eyes of Maija Tabaka

The exhibition “Maija Tabaka and West-Berlin” is on show at the Arsenāls gallery of the Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga (Torņa iela 1) from 9 June to 20 August 2017.

Tabaka is among the most popular and best-known artists Latvia has to offer. When the artist arrived to West Berlin, Latvia was still under Soviet rule and her contact with Western artists and an open society rapidly exploded into a fresh style of painting.

Tabaka quickly gained fame for her works' "expressiveness and colour schemes", and captivating "visions, which fuse nature and imagination" say organizers
