Three for the Weekend: Patriotic weekend

Take note – story published 7 years ago

It's Latvia's 98th birthday on November 18 and the weekend promises lots of solemn fun.

Independence Day everywhere

As usual Independence Day will be marked by a military parade, a speech by the President, a ceremonial sitting of parliament and numerous commemorations across the country. There should be events in your vicinity wherever you reside.

The celebrations will be concluded in Rīga at 9 p.m. with singing of the national anthem and fireworks galore.

If you're interested in things military, there's still time to see NATO minesweeper ships docked in central Rīga.

Rīga is LIT

The Staro Riga illuminations, which began November 17, will continue over the weekend in the capital, Riga. Most of the events are conveniently located at Rīga's center. Here's a map of the event.

Films for Europe

From November 20 to 22 the Splendid Palace cinema in Rīga hosts the LUX Film days that aim to go to the heart of European public debate.

November 20 at 11 a.m. will see the screening of the animation film My Life as Courgette, while November 21 at 7 p.m. will screen As I Open My Eyes, and on Novebmer 22 at 7 p.m. the film Toni Erdmann will be screened.

While this weekend Latvians are invited to reflect on the future of the country, and as Latvia is part of the EU what better way to cap the weekend than to see something that's part of the European spectrum of things.
