The Riga International Film Festival 2ANNAS launched Friday at downtown cinema halls, seeking to introduce audiences to “innovative modes of audio-visual communication from all over the world.”

The festival opened Friday at 18:00 with a ceremonial screening of the expressionist Robert Wiene's landmark silent masterpiece “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” at the Splendid Palace, accompanied by music composed especially for the show.

This year’s festival will host separate Baltic and international competitions of novice and established short-film authors, as well as screenings of full-length debut features under the unifying theme TRANSGRESSORS – Pathfinders and Pioneers of Cinema.

In addition to the so-called Focus Programmes on cinematic transgressions from multiple genres, 2ANNAS will also host a workshop on using 16mm film format by Vassily Bourikas, a multi-disciplinary program “Where heroes are born”, discussions for students of movie-making, Q&A sessions with participating guests and “wild” post-event parties, according to the festival website.
