Urgent fire safety works start in Rīga's 'Corner House'

SJSC "Valsts nekustamie īpašumi" (State Real Estate, VNĪ) has started emergency works in the former KGB building (Corner House) related to the dismantling of the fire detection and alarm system and the construction of a new system throughout the building, VNĪ said on April 4.

During the works, it is expected that the Occupation museum located in the building will be able to continue its activities without interruptions, says VNĪ Board Member Andris Vārna.

Andris Vārna said: "Our goal is to ensure that the Latvian Occupation Museum continues to operate without losing its essence and historical significance. To achieve this, urgent work has already started this week, using financial resources that will be recovered from the proceeds of the building's disposal. It is important to note that our aim is not only to keep the museum open to the public while the works are carried out, but also to contribute to its long-term stability and development."

The works plan, together with a request for an extension of the deadline for the works, will be submitted to the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD). The works plan foresees the dismantling of the existing fire detection and alarm system and the construction of a new system throughout the building, the dismantling of the fire water supply and equipment and the construction of a new system and pump station, the dismantling of the non-operational electrical wiring, and the filling of any loose areas in the fire-resistant structures.

In parallel, VNĪ and the Museum of the Occupation will review the lease agreement for the museum premises to ensure that the agreement identifies and clearly stipulates all the premises required for the museum's exhibitions and operations. The lease agreement and the entry in the land register for 30 years will guarantee the operation of the museum for the specified period, regardless of the status of the building.
