Happy independence day from... everyone!

Take note – story published 6 years ago

November 18 is the day upon which the Latvian Republic was declared in 1918, and consequently is independence day - the Latvian equivalent of July 4 in the United States.

A huge program of events and celebrations will mark this, the 99th anniversary of that landmark event and as might be expected, good wishes and congratulations are flowing across social media as well as everywhere else.

In 1918, in what is nowadays the National Theater in Riga, the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed as an independent state. In the wake of World War I, Latvian political groups realized their dream of establishing an independent state. The first period of existence of the Republic of Latvia lasted up to June 17, 1940, when Soviet forces occupied the country. More than 51 years passed before the independent Republic of Latvia was restored on August 21, 1991.

So here are a few examples of the good wishes to get you in the mood.

And if we might be allowed to join the party, happy Latvian independence day from the LSM English language service.
