“It's currently a construction area where these jobs are going very smoothly and dynamically, so it's fenced off. Of course, there is a fuss about this work. Therefore, everything is fenced off at the moment, and we do not go in, because then everyone must be equipped with all security means,” said Ravis Ragainis, Chairman of the Jēkabpils Municipality.
No assembly or protests were observed at the construction site at the time of LTV's visits. The views of passers-by are different.
“Very well, my view is positive. I have nothing negative to say. I believe that in view of what is happening in the world at present, such things do not have to be in Latvia,” said Jēkabpils resident Arta.
Lidija is of a different opinion: "These people have no conscience, doing this to their history, to their own people,” she said.
The cannon platform was taken to a municipal warehouse after dismantling, while the concrete columns will be destroyed.
Since there is a possibility that the Red Army soldiers have been buried under the platform on which the cannon was previously located, there will also be a probe. If remains are found, they will be reburied in the cemetery.
