It is planned to remove and destroy the hammer and sickle symbols on the buildings on Kalnciema Street 57 and Brīvības Drive 318, but the memorial plaque for Mārtiņš Poga on Jāņa Asara Street and the plaque on Ganību Dam are intended to be handed over to the Museum of Occupation of Latvia.
Inese Andersone (New Unity), head of the committee, said that the building of the Spilve airport and the decorations on the Latvian Academy of Sciences were not to be demolished after all.
“In consultation with the [National Heritage] Administration, the list was adjusted, [..]. Things like, let's say, Spilva airport, are a time capsule and it would not be wise that we are starting to rip something off the front or put something in front of it. On the Academy of Sciences, these sickle and hammer are walled into the facade – tiles. The local government, honestly, can't really do anything. The owner of the building should then decide for themselves,” Andersone said.
