Two persons were detained at the Soviet monument in Daugavpils, State Police told LETA on October 30.

Unofficial information shows that the Soviet monuments in the mostly Russian-speaking eastern city of Latvia will be toppled, in accordance with the law, on the night to October 31. Since Friday, people have been gathering and leaving flowers by the monument.

On Sunday one person was detained for singing war-glorifying songs, while the other was detained or being in a public place under the influence of alcohol. After the police came to the person and asked that the music be turned off, other people rushed to defend her. People began singing the Soviet songs of World War II. After an exchange of words, a woman and a man were detained, according to the police.

State Police also said that one administrative infringement process was initiated regarding infringement of the rules on drone flying at the location.

In general, the situation is peaceful, as reported by Latvian Radio. A few dozen people come, set flowers, and walk away.

Earlier this week, the State Police announced that on October 30, 22:00, it will stop people from accessing two monuments in Daugavpils by the morning of the following day. The city's inhabitants went to the monuments to set flowers, light candles, and take photographs. Neither the city council nor the State Police made more comments on how and when the overthrow of the two obelisks would take place.
