As reported earlier, all weekend, people had gathered to lay flowers at the foot of the monument and take photos after being urged to do so by the mayor of Latvia's second-largest city. Daugavpils is a predominantly Russian-speaking city. According to data published recently by Central Statistical Bureau, only 20.9% of people in Daugavpils are ethnic Latvians.
Around 22:00 Sunday, police started dispersing people who instead gathered in nearby streets. Heavy machinery was brought around midnight, and people began protesting verbally, swearing and booing, and throwing bottles at police cars.
Several people were detained, as observed by LTV. According to the State Police, 37 people were detained in total.
