On the night to Monday, October 31, the Soviet-glorifying obelisk in Daugavpils' Slavas Square, was taken down, Latvian Television reported.

As reported earlier, all weekend, people had gathered to lay flowers at the foot of the monument and take photos after being urged to do so by the mayor of Latvia's second-largest city. Daugavpils is a predominantly Russian-speaking city. According to data published recently by Central Statistical Bureau, only 20.9% of people in Daugavpils are ethnic Latvians.
