'deciBels' contemporary music festival in Rīga this week

From March 18 to 22, the tenth JVLMA Contemporary Music Festival "deciBels" will take place at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA) in Riga, the organizers of the festival have announced.

One of the main events of the festival will be a performance of the work "Regnum Vegetabile" by Italian composers Mauro Lanza and Andrea Valle, which will be performed on the evening of March 19. In this work, the composers have written a score not only for six musicians but also for light bulbs, harmonicas, hairdryers, radios, and other objects that are set to music with the help of new technologies.

The festival program also includes a collaboration of 14 choral conducting and 14 composition students - 14 new works performed by the JVLMA Mixed Choir, as well as a performance by a joint big band of the Academy of Music, Riga Cathedral Choir School, and Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music High School, this time together with Norwegian pianist Espen Berg, which has already become a tradition.

The festival's opening concert "Vitrīna" promises a musically varied experience, offering an insight into the activities of JVLMA students in the field of composition, interpretation, and improvisation, and the festival will close with Juris Žvikovs and Sanita Glazenburga performing works for piano duet by classical and very young composers of contemporary music.

The festival's events can be viewed on the deciBels Facebook page and on the JVLMC website.
