RFS crowned champions in dramatic football finale

Latvia's football season had a thrilling climax November 11 with RFS crowned champions in dramatic circumstances.

On the final day of Virsliga fixtures, RFS kicked off against Metta/LU in second place, one point behind league leaders Rīga who were playing against last season's champions, Valmiera. That meant a win for Rīga would secure them the league title, while RFS were relying on their rivals to draw or lose and win their own game to steal the crown.

That indeed is what transpired. Both matches were scoreless at half time, but took a dramatic twist when Valmiera took the lead against Rīga. Then RFS scored against Metta/LU to put them in the box seat, only for Rīga to pull one back late in the game against Valmiera. Another goal would have secured them the championship, and a frenetic final few minutes ensued in which Rīga had several good chances to win. But they failed to do so, meaning that the final table has RFS on top with 89 points and Rīga second, just one point behind.

A very commendable third place goes to Auda, with 58 points, while defending champions Valmiera finished fourth with 53 points. All four teams will now enjoy European competition next year.
