Latvia loses hope for hockey quarter-finals with painful loss to USA

The Latvian national ice hockey team lost 3:6 to the USA in the last game of the group round in Ostrava on Tuesday and lost their chance to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Championship. The Latvian national team finished the championship in 9th place.

Only a win in regulation time would have kept Latvia in the quarter-finals, and Sweden's win in regulation time against Slovakia would have been required too.

The goals for Latvia in the last game of the championship were scored by Renārs Krastenbergs, Eduards Tralmaks and Roberts Mamčics.

The USA took a 2:0 lead in the first period and scored the third goal early in the second period. Latvia did manage to fight back to reduce the difference to 3:4. However, the powerful USA team recovered and scored a fifth goal before scoring again late in the match when Latvia had a field player replace the goalkeeper in a final desperate push.

Nevertheless, Latvia exit the tournament with their heads held high having again earned the right to be called a world top ten force.
