The Latvian Football Federation's (LFF) board decided during a meeting on January 20 to dismiss the Latvian national football team's head coach Slavisa Stojanovič and appoint Dainis Kazakevičs the team's new head coach, reported the LETA newswire.

At the moment, the 38-year-old Kazakevics is the head coach of the Latvian Under-21 team.

The LFF board is planning to sign a three-year agreement with Kazakevičs and find a new head coach for the national U-21 team.

"My plan is to have ambitious and motivated players in the squad. Age will definitely not be the only factor, but motivation for the team to get the result it needs," said Kazakevics on his appointment.

The LFF board thanked Stojanovič for his contribution to the development of the national team. Slovenian Stojanovic was appointed the Latvian national football team's coach less than a year ago in March 2019 with the team in dire straits.

The bad form continued, though the last few matches had seen some improvement and as reported by LSM, in November the team finally recorded a victory, after which Stojanivič spoke in optimistic terms. However, it seems that was not enough for the LFF.

The Latvian national football team is currently in 137th place in FIFA rankings.
