Mixed results for Latvian tennis players in Beijing

On Saturday, Latvia's second lady tennis player Jeļena Ostapenko defeated the Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the opening round of the Beijing WTA Premier series tennis tournament.

At the moment Ostapenko is ranked 74th in the WTA rankings, while Pliskova is ranked second in the world.

Ostapenko has earned 65 WTA ranking points for advancing to the second round of the tournament, where she will take on the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova, currently ranked 41st in the world.

Sevastova knocked out

Meanwhile on Sunday, Latvia's top ranked lady tennis player Anastasija Sevastova lost to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 7-6, 1-6, 2-6 in the opening round of the Beijing WTA Premier series tennis tournament.

At the moment, Sevastova is ranked 19th in the world, while Svitolina is ranked third.

Sevastova has earned 10 WTA ranking points for competing in the Beijing tournament.
