The Latvian government on September 26 supported an initiative from the Health Ministry for the creation of a new national anti-doping agency.

Having such a national agency is a necessary requirement from the World Anti Doping Agency so that Latvian athletes and sports teams are not disallowed from competing in international sporting competitions, including the Olympics.

The government approved the Health Ministry and the Education and Science Ministry, which is responsible for sports in Latvia, as the responsible institutions to create the new National Anti Doping Agency.

The Health Ministry explained that this new national anti-doping agency will take over the functions of the National Sports Medicines Center in supervising and monitoring doping activities nationwide.

The ministry also informed the cabinet that the new anti-doping agency will have autonomy, as well as financial independence in accordance with international requirements.

Sports officials have urged the creation of the agency as a priority so that Latvian athletes will not face the growing possibility of being excluded from international competitions.
