Powerful Poles down Latvian soccer team in Rīga

Latvia's lengthy run of poor resuts continued in the Euro 2020 qualifying tournament October 10 with a well-drilled Polish outfit taking all the points on offer in Rīga.

The star of the night was Polish striker Robert Lewandowski who scored a hat-trick of goals to secure a comfortable 0:3 win and spoil Latvian goalkeeper Andris Vaņinš' 100th appearance for the national team.

It is now 15 games since Latvia recorded an international win of any sort (a 1:0 win against Estonia in a Baltic Cup match) and two years since they won in meaningful international competition (a 4:0 win over minnows Andorra in World Cup qualifying in October 2017).

The result leaves Latvia bottom of their qualifying group G with no chance of making next year's Euro 2020 finals. They have no points at all. Poland leads the group on 16 points, followed by Austria with 13, Northern Macedonia and Slovenia both with 11, and Israel with 8.

Latvia now ranks in 139th position in the FIFA international rankings.
