'Golden horses' collector coin to be sold for 125 euros

The Latvian central bank (Latvijas Banka, LB) has published details of its latest collector coin, which comes with an equine theme and was designed by Ivars Heinrihsons.

It is called 'The Golden Horses'. Explaining the reasoning behind the horsey theme, the central bank said:

"In the words of the artist, the coin's content is inspired by a popular Latvian folk song and the golden Latvian sea as well as by the ancient Greek myth of the horses pulling the chariot of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Both inspirations are brought together by the supernatural manifestation of radiance in the form of horses. Gold is linked associatively and visually to the sun, the 'golden saddle' – to its radiance in the sea. For Latvians and their kindred peoples, the colour of gold is associated with divinity and celestial deities, most of all, the Sun as a deity."

Consequently there is a pair of stylized horses on one side of the coin and a carriage wheel/sun on the other side.

"The Golden Horse" (Zelta zirgs) in the singular, is also the name of one of the best-known plays in the Latvian literary canon, written by Rainis (Jānis Pliekšāns).

As usual, the central bank has also gone to the trouble of producing a video about the coin, of which a maximum 2,500 will be minted in Lithuania.
