Latvian central bank promises you a miracle for 62 euros

"I promised you a miracle" sang Scottish New Wave supergroup Simple Minds in their 1982 smash hit. Now the Latvian central bank (Latvijas banka, LB) is in simple mind mode itself by promising you a "Miracle coin".

The miracle will take physical form on Wednesday, 22 December, for purchase on the website e-monetas.lv from 12:00 only. The silver coin has a face value of 5 euros but sells for 62 euros, which must be a miracle of some sort.

News of any fresh bit of loose change from LB wouldn't be the same without an expansive explanation of the historical, social, anthropological, and in this case magical rationale behind the coin in question, and this example is no exception.

"The message of the coin is that the difference between a miracle and everyday life lies in one's capability to perceive. An observant person would see a miracle in the smallest of things, while a flowering meadow would become a fairy tale kingdom. You just need a bit of light to crack the darkness of monotony, and this light is imagination," ponders the central bank.

"The central image of the coin is a beam of light, a bright point growing wider and revealing a new world to the viewer: it emerges as a colourful motif of plants," it ruminates.

"It is imagination that even in the darkest night lets you see the extraordinary and spot and find the light in the darkness, the miraculous in the prose of life," it adds, though heresay attributes similar qualities to the regular consumption of carrots.

"The world discovered by imagination is Latvia's wonderful nature. It is a flowering meadow where we also find two of its inhabitants: the white hare (Lepus timidus) and the grey hare (Lepus europaeus). These creatures symbolise agility, wit, fertility and magical power," notes the institution renowned for having some of the cleverest people in the country working for it.

"The coin is like a light, a guiding lantern showing the way, a miracle you can carry in your pocket, reminding you of the power of imagination and hope," it states confidently.

The graphic design is by Dana Jasinkeviča and the coin was struck by Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt in the Netherlands.
