Latvia saw double-digit tourism boost in August

According to data published by the Central Statistical Bureau October 15, in August 2024 the number of non-resident and resident visitors in Latvia comprised 381,000 which is 13.5 % more than in August 2023.

Compared to August last year, the number of nights spent by visitors comprised 676,300, which is 10.7 % more.

In the first eight months of this year, the number of non-resident and resident visitors comprised 1.9 million, which is 10.5 % more than in the eight months of 2023, however, it is 5.9 % less than in the eight months of 2019, during the time before the pandemic.

In total, 1.1 million visitors were accommodated during the main tourism season in the summer months: in June, July and August. Both the number of resident and non-resident visitors at accommodation establishments has increased, compared to June–August 2023 (by 7.4 % and 14.6 %, respectively).

In August 2024 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 58.9 % or 224.5 thousand people, which is 15 % more than in August last year, but 14.9 % fewer than before the pandemic in August 2019 and Russia's war in Ukraine, which has an impact on the arrival of non-residents to Latvia.

The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to August last year, has grown by 13.9 % and comprised 410.3 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.8 nights at tourist accommodation establishments (1.85 nights in August last year).

The majority of non-resident visitors came from Lithuania (47.9 thousand), Germany (28.6 thousand), Estonia (24.7 thousand), Finland (13.1 thousand), Poland (11.9 thousand), Spain (10.1 thousand), United Kingdom (8.8 thousand), USA (8.4 thousand), Italy (6.7 thousand) and France (6.4 thousand).

Most non-resident visitors were hosted in Riga – 59.4 %, Jūrmala – 11.8 %, Liepāja – 3.9 %, Ventspils – 2.8 %, Sigulda municipality – 2.5 %, Limbaži municipality – 2.4 % and Mārupe municipality – 2.2 %.

In August 2024 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 156.6 thousand Latvian visitors, which is 11.5 % more than in August 2023 and 25.7 % more than in August 2019 before the pandemic. The number of nights spent by them comprised 266 thousand, which is a rise of 6 %, compared to August last year. Residents on average spent 1.7 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.8 nights in August last year).

Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (17.9 %), Jūrmala (7.9 %), Cēsis municipality (6.7 %), Talsi municipality (6.5 %), Liepāja (5.7 %), Limbaži municipality (4.6 %), Tukums municipality (4.2 %) and Kuldīga municipality (4.1 %).

Average room occupancy rate of hotels and similar accommodation in Latvia was 58.7 % in August (a rise of 1.1 percentage point, compared to August last year), Riga – 69.1 % (an increase of 3.3 percentage points, compared to August last year).
