Latvians are dill-obsessed and proud

Living in Denmark Krista Miltiņa came to look at Latvians from a different perspective, and now she's turned the artwork she created featuring these observations into a business after one of the drawings she posted blew up on social media.

“I thought a lot about Latvians, what we're like. The first illustrations came about because I wanted to gift my friends something, and I began drawing illustrations about us - Latvians,” said Miltiņa.

She has been a fan of drawing since childhood, and went to Denmark to study design after studying in Latvian art schools. When Miltiņa returned to Latvia she posted one of her drawings about dill (a popular herb in Latvia) on Facebook, and the next morning it already had three thousand likes:

“People started writing that they want all sorts of things with this drawing - totes, shirts, sweatshirts. I understood that I have to start printing, have to start doing something,” said the artist.

It had been so simple, so she began to inquire about what foreigners think of Latvians for her next batch of witty and ironic drawings. As it turns out foreigners are also just as big of fans of her work as locals. She sells her printed items at the Kalnciema Quarter market and had several foreigners buying her products.

Miltiņa is currently working on a line of souvenir products and plans to open up an internet shop in the spring so people can have easier access to her printed items.
