New Latvian startup portal promises "impossible support"

A new platform designed to encourage foreigners to form startup businesses in Latvia has opened.

The slogan-heavy home page of Startup Latvia makes several eye-catching claims, including a legally interesting promise to provide "ALL POSSIBLE & IMPOSSIBLE SUPPORT" while reminding users "DON'T FORGET TO LIVE A LIFE".

The site, which is supported by the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA) also says success is not measured in investment but instead "ultimate success hides in EXIT."

The attractions of starting a business in Latvia are laid out in other sections of the website, albeit all in a breathless, wide-eyed prose style that is assumed to be how entrepreneurs exchange pleasantries these days.

"We’re tri-lingual, well-educated, creative and we kick ass*s!" it is claimed.

Entering a moment of self reflection, the website ponders: "We have started our own transformation towards becoming a startup one-stop-shop – Magnetic Latvia Startup – which will provide all foreign founders with nowadays concierge service."

"To succeed in Silicon Valley, you have to be a genius. In Latvia – at the moment – you just need to be very very good," it says reassuringly.

More usefully there is also a directory of existing startup businesses.

Less usefully, the section of the website dedicated to Startup Investments appears not to be ready and offers this by way of an excuse: "Rome wasn’t built in a day – and so was not this database. Come back to check this section soon!"

You can see what's on offer at startuplatvia.eu.
