Farmers will not protest in Rīga next week

There will be no farmers' protests in Rīga on Monday, February 12, but the next few weeks will be crucial to decide on farmers' next steps, said Juris Lazdiņš, Chairman of the Board of the Association “Farmers Saeima”, newswire LETA reports Friday.

Lazdiņš said that it is now important to agree and obtain acceptance of all claims submitted by farmers, so negotiations with the government and officials will continue over the next week.

“At the same time, the necessary documents will be submitted to Riga City Council for farmers' protests in February in the capital, because the next few weeks will be crucial. The coming time will show whether the commitment of politicians and civil servants to actively work for the entire agricultural sector is not just a temporary promise,“ Lazdiņš said.

He also expressed “positive caution” about the progress of negotiations with Agriculture Minister Armands Krauze (Union of Greens and Farmers) and representatives of the Ministry.

But while the association sees the meeting with Saeima Speaker Daiga Mieriņa (UGF) as a success, there are still “open questions” after meeting with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, said Lazdiņš.
