Latvians call and text less, browse Internet more

Last year, mobile Internet users consumed an average of 42 GB per month – 18% more than in 2021, while the duration of call minutes and the number of SMS messages sent decreased, according to data published on May 9 by the Public Utilities Commission (SPRK) on the figures of electronic communications operators in 2022. 

Last year there were 2.2 million mobile Internet connections in Latvia.

SPRK said there was a tendency to use different apps for communication rather than calling.

Total revenue from services provided by electronic communications operators increased by 5.3%, at EUR 562 million.

The largest operators – LMT, Tele2, Bite Latvija, and Tet – represented a market share of 81%.

The number of electronic communications operators in Latvia continues to decrease and the number of active registered merchants was 220 at the end of 2022.

In view of the increase in tariffs for electronic communications services in 2022, revenues for mobile Internet services increased by 9.2%, fixed Internet services – by 5.6%, and voice communication services on mobile networks – by 11.5%.

According to data compiled by SPRK, last year there were 3 million mobile service connections in Latvia, of which 2.2 million were mobile Internet connections used for the Internet on a telephone, computer, or tablet, while the number of fixed Internet connections decreased by 0.2%.

Compared to 2021, the number of users using mobile Internet on the phone has increased by 1.6%.

Meanwhile, the number of connections where the Internet service is used on a computer or tablet using a mobile Internet rover was 400,045 at the end of 2022. Of these, 71% are connected to individuals (households).

The mobile Internet service that users use on their phone or computer is provided by three operators in Latvia – LMT, Tele2 and Bite Latvija Ltd. Of the total number of mobile Internet connections in Latvia, 38.31% of connections are provided by LMT, 38.28% by Tele2 and 23.4% by Bite Latvija.

Last year one user consumed 42 GB on average per month, or 18% more than in 2021. 

On average per month, one user talked on the mobile network for 3 hours and 52 minutes, which is 8.9% less than in 2021, and sent 32 text messages (13.4% less compared to 2021).

Mobile users have been more active in international calls last year – the number of minutes has increased by 8%.

Last year, the Internet service SIA “Tet” provided 50% of the total number of fixed broadband Internet connections, while the SIA “Baltcom” provided 20% and SIA “Balticom” provided 15%, while other merchants provided 16%.
