Hockey championship shows in Latvia's tourism statistics for May

Data published on July 14 by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in May 2023 the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 202.1 thousand, which is 22.2 % more than in May 2022.

The visitors spent 359.8 thousand nights at the establishments, which is 21.5 % more than in May a year ago.

In the five months of this year, the number of non-resident and resident visitors comprised 758.2 thousand, which is 29.2 % more than in the five months of 2022, however, it is 18.1 % less than in the five months of 2019, during the time before the pandemic.

In May 2023 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 59.4 % or 120.1 thousand people, which is 37.1 % more than in May a year ago, but 34.4 % less than before the pandemic in May 2019. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to May 2022, has grown by 37.3 % and comprised 227.1 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.9 nights at the tourist accommodation.

The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (17.3 thousand), Estonia (13.6 thousand), Germany (10.7 thousand), Finland (7.8 thousand), United Kingdom (6.5 thousand), Poland (5.7 thousand), USA (5.4 thousand) and Sweden (5.1 thousand).

Compared to May a year ago, the number of visitors from Slovakia (8.8 times), Switzerland (6.6 times) and Czechia (3.5 times) increased significantly, which can be explained by the influence of the Ice Hockey World Championship held in Riga in May. The number of visitors from these countries also exceeded the number of visitors in May 2019 before the pandemic – from Slovakia (5.7 times), Czechia (4 times) and Switzerland (2.1 times).

Most foreign visitors were hosted in Riga – 75.6 %, Jūrmala – 8.2 %, Liepāja – 2.6 %, Mārupe municipality – 2.5 %, Sigulda municipality – 1.5%, Bauska municipality – 1.2 % and Cēsis municipality – 1.1 %.

In May 2023, 82 thousand resident arrivals were registered at tourist accommodation establishments, which is 5.5 % more than in May 2022 and 6.5 % more than in May 2019 before the pandemic. The number of nights spent by them comprised 132.7 thousand, and it rose by 1.6 %, compared to May last year.

Mostly residents stayed in Riga (26.8 %), Jūrmala (9.6 %), Liepāja (9 %), Cēsis municipality (4.2 %), Sigulda municipality (4.1 %), Daugavpils (3.3 %) and Valmiera municipality (3 %).
