Hotel visitor numbers were up in January

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia and published March 14 show that in January 2024 the number of arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 127.9 thousand, which is 6.4 % more than in January 2023.

The visitors spent 217.6 thousand nights, which is only 0.3 % more than in January a year ago – so there would appear to be more visitors on shorter stays.

In January 2024 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 52.2 % or 66.7 thousand people, which is 6 % more than in January a year ago and 39.9 % fewer than before the pandemic in January 2020. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to January 2022, has grown by 1.2 % and comprised 120 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.8 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.9 nights in January last year).

The majority of non-resident visitors came from Lithuania (13.8 thousand), Estonia (8.4 thousand), United Kingdom (5.7 thousand), Germany (5 thousand), Poland (3.1 thousand), Finland (2.9 thousand), Ukraine (2.4 thousand), USA (2.3 thousand) and Sweden (2 thousand).

Most non-resident visitors were hosted in Riga – 77.4 %, Jūrmala – 5.6 %, Mārupe municipality – 5.5 %, Liepāja – 3.3 % and Daugavpils – 1 %.

In January 2024 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 61.2 thousand Latvian visitors, which is 6.9 % more than in January 2023 and 15.6 % more than in January 2020 before the beginning of pandemic. The number of nights spent by them comprised 97.6 thousand, which is a drop of 0.9 %, compared to January last year. Residents on average spent 1.6 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.7 nights in January last year).

Mostly residents stayed in Riga (30.1 %), Jūrmala (14.6 %), Liepāja (7 %), Daugavpils (5.3 %), Sigulda municipality (4.9 %), Cēsis municipality (4 %) and Valmiera municipality (3.3 %).
