Tourist numbers up again in April

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia nd published June 15 show that in April 2023 the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments totalled 169.2 thousand, which is 16.7 % more than in April 2022.

The visitors spent 305.3 thousand nights at the establishments, which is 15.3 % more than in April a year ago.

In the first four months of this year, the number of non-resident and resident visitors comprised 556.1 thousand, which is 32 % more than in the four months of 2022, however, it is still 16.4 % less than in the four months of 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic massively impacted the sector.

In April 2023 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 58.3 % or 98.7 thousand people, which is 33.7 % more than in April a year ago, but 32.3 % less than before the pandemic in April 2019. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to April 2022, has grown by 29.4 % and comprised 185.9 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.9 nights at the tourist accommodation.

The greatest number of non-resident travellers came from Lithuania (15.4 thousand), Estonia (13.5 thousand), Finland (8.4 thousand), Germany (7.2 thousand), United Kingdom (5.9 thousand) and Poland (5.5 thousand).

Most non-resident visitors were hosted in Riga – 80.1 %, Jūrmala – 5.6 %, Mārupe municipality – 3.4 %, Liepāja – 2.2 %, Daugavpils – 1.5 % and Sigulda municipality – 1.1 %.

In April 2023 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 70.5 thousand Resident visitors, which is 1 % less than in April 2022, but 18 % more than in April 2019 before the pandemic. The residents spent 119.4 thousand nights at the establishments, which is a drop of 1.4 % compared to April a year ago.

Residents stayed mostly in Riga (31.5 %), Jūrmala (13.3 %), Liepāja (7.4 %), Sigulda municipality (4.3 %), Daugavpils (3.8 %), Cēsis municipality (3.5 %) and Kuldīga municipality (3.3 %).
