Nearly 8% of Latvian population could not access necessities in 2022

Results of the population survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) show that 7.8 % of the population suffered from severe material and social deprivation in 2022 (2.5 percentage points more than in 2021 when the figure was 5.3%).

Severe material and social deprivation mean experiencing an enforced lack of at least 7 out of 13 deprivation items, e.g., capacity to being confronted with payment arrears, spending a small amount of money each week on oneself, or having regular leisure activities.

In 2022 severe material and social deprivation rate among the population with the lowest income (in the bottom or first quintile group2) accounted for 22.3 % (annual rise of 6.1 percentage points). Among the population with the highest income (in fifth or top quintile group) it was 1.1 % (0.2 % in 2021). The indicator was calculated based on a self-perceived situation, and a small proportion of the richest population believed that are experiencing an enforced lack of several material and social deprivation items.

Material and social deprivation data were acquired in the 2022 survey on population income and living conditions conducted by the CSB from 30 January to 30 June. The survey covered 5.8 thousand households and 10.3 thousand respondents aged 16 and over.
