Retail trade down 2.3% in Latvia

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) published on July 28 by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to June 2022, in June 2023 total retail trade turnover reduced by 2.3 %. 

Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 5.2 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) decreased by 2.9 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – increased by 5.5 %.

As compared to June 2022, the largest turnover growth was recorded in retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (of 10.0 %). The turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialized stores selling mainly non-food products (of 22.1 %), retail sale in stalls or markets (13.3 %) and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (10.2 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices fell by 0.3 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to May, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in June 2023 fell by 1.0 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 0.5%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) reduced by 1.4 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 2.8 %.

As compared to the previous month, significant turnover growth was registered in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (of 7.5 %), retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (6.1 %) and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (4.0 %). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (of 7.5 %), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (6.1 %) and retail sale in stalls or markets (4.0 %).

Compared to May, in June 2023 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 0.6 %.
