Tangerines at the top of Latvian Christmas shopping list

At Christmas, as usual, many are doing grocery shopping. are getting more in stores. Representatives of the retail chains Rimi and Maxima said the most-demanded products remained similar from year to year, and tangerines are at the top of the list, Latvian Television reported on December 27.

This year, it can be seen that the public is keeping a close eye on their spending. Buyers mostly choose discounted goods and often compare the prices of goods between stores to buy them as cheaply as possible. This year is also more different because shoppers don't postpone their shopping for the last moment, said Maxima spokesman Jānis Beseris.

This year, at the top of the list, tangerines were the most popular item at Christmas.

"Gingerbreads, of course, a variety of ingredients for salads, including eggs, mayonnaise, and various vegetables. No Christmas is imaginable without desserts either. As a result, a wide range of chocolates are also purchased," Maxima's representative said.

The range of products is unchanged in comparison with other years. Discounts are also a determining factor.

“We focus on keeping our discounts current and important so shoppers can get everything they need in one place for the festivities,” Beseris added.

Rimi, too, has seen traditions preserved. Tangerines, trout fillets, pork roasts and cheese salads have been the most sought-after. During any festivities, including Christmas, a constant value for shoppers is the Cielaviņa cake.

“What we can see in general – yes, there are traditional things that shoppers have liked to buy and put on the festive table. It's both fresh fish and different kinds of other things that contribute to the festive meal. [..] Parchment paper is also 16% more often purchased compared to last year," said Inga Bite, representative of Rimi Latvija Ltd.

The influx of people in shops for the festive period is constant every year, and seemingly on every resident's table, the most important thing to create a Christmas feel is tangerines.
