Latvia's retail turnover slightly down on year in August

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) published on September 29 by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to August 2022, in August 2023 total retail trade turnover reduced by 2.7 %.

Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 2.7 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) decreased by 3.4 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 1.2 %.

As compared to August 2022, the most significant turnover growth was registered in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (of 14.4 %), retail sale in stalls or markets (7.5 %) and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialized stores (4.8 %). A turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialized stores selling mainly non-food products (of 36.2 %), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (9.7 %) and retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (6.9 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices fell by 0.5 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to July, in August 2023, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises fell by 0.4 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 0.5%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) reduced by 1.0 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel by 0.6 %.

As compared to the previous month, significant turnover increase was registered in retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (of 6.8 %), retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialized stores (6.4 %) and retail sale in stalls or markets (2.2 %). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialized stores selling mainly non-food products (of 5.5 %), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (4.7 %) and retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (3.5 %).

Compared to July, in August 2023 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 2.4 %.
