According to the Latvian Investment and Development Agency (LIAA), around 3,000 guest workers left Latvia throughout April, but about 400 have returned.

Due to the state of emergency caused by Covid-19, international passenger transport in Latvia is closed. On Wednesday, May 6, airBaltic will continue repatriation flights from Amsterdam and Frankfurt to the Baltic States. For the past month, ships and airBaltic flights have also been transporting Latvian workers to their jobs abroad. A flight to and from Oslo is scheduled for Wednesday. Work-related travels are assessed by LIAA.

"The employees of Latvian companies are travelling mainly to Sweden and through Sweden to other Scandinavian countries, or to Germany. We receive approximately 1000 such applications within a week", said Kaspars Rožkalns, Director of LIAA.

"LIAA is coordinating cooperation between Latvian companies and passenger carriers to ensure smooth travel abroad and back.

"Companies must prove that the trips are necessary to fulfill obligations. These are mainly construction, metalworking, and machine construction companies with supply and installation contracts. This means that they have produced the equipment, and employees must travel to install it," Rožkalns told Latvijas Radio.
