Agricultural prices rose markedly in 2021

The average purchase price of cereals rose last year from EUR 164.94 per tonne in 2020 to EUR 192.88 in 2021, an increase of 16.9 %. The biggest price increases were for rye and barley, by 30.0 % and 28.7 %, respectively. Wheat, which accounts for 84 % of total grain purchases in 2021, increased by EUR 27.13 or 15.9 % to EUR 197.49 per tonne.

The average purchase price of rape seeds rose from EUR 358.75 per tonne in 2020 to EUR 475.30 in 2021, an increase of 32.5 %, the highest ever for rape seeds in Latvia.

The average purchase price for vegetables increased by EUR 125.98 per tonne, or 18.3 %, and for potatoes by EUR 15.89, or 11.6 %, compared to 2020.

In 2021, the average purchase price for beef rose sharply, from EUR 1 859.63 per tonne in 2020 to EUR 2 146.51 in 2021, or by 15.4 %.

There was also a significant price increase for mutton - of EUR 539.37 per tonne, or 15.7 %. In 2021, the average purchase price for poultry increased by EUR 158.32 per tonne or 8.4 %.

The average purchase price of milk rose from EUR 280.93 per tonne in 2020 to EUR 318.01 in 2021, an increase of 13.2 %, the highest ever price for milk in Latvia.

In the livestock sector, there was a decrease in the purchase price for pork only - by EUR 176.01 per tonne, or 11.9 %, to EUR 1 301.72; that is the lowest price in four years.

Compared to the previous year, the average purchase price of eggs increased by 0.7 % - from EUR 7.13 in 2020 to EUR 7.18 per 100 eggs in 2021.
