In preparation for winter, the transmission system operators of the Scandinavian and Baltic States have jointly carried out an analysis of the adequacy of electricity supply resources in the region.
The report acknowledges that the following winter is one of the most challenging in recent years due to the adverse conditions in Europe's energy markets caused by the war in Ukraine and the dry summer.
Total power supply capacity is sufficient for the forthcoming winter in the region, but capacity reserves are small and there are many uncertainties. The analysis does not indicate the need to limit consumption, but it cannot be excluded.
Therefore, transmission system operators shall inform the public and prepare an action plan for such a scenario. Supply constraints could be implemented in the event of extreme need, said a joint report prepared by transmission system operators.
Regardless of the adequacy of electricity supply capacity, high electricity prices are expected in winter, as energy supplies are limited and uncertainty in energy markets is high. It is therefore advised that consumers analyze and, as far as possible, reduce their consumption during high-price periods which also improves the adequacy of the electricity supply capacity.
