Card payments total up 17% in 2021 in Latvia

In 2021 in Latvia, card payments totaling 6.693 billion euro were executed, according to the Latvian central bank (Latvijas banka, LB), LETA reported January 12.

This is 17.7% more than in 2020 when 5.677 billion euros worth of payments were made. 

EUR 4.723 billion was withdrawn in cash, down 0.5% on 2020, and comprising 41.41% of all card settlements. Payments in shops comprised 40.52%, payments for vehicles 5.49%, followed by transport services payments, utility payments and professional services payments at over 2% each.

On the other hand, card payments for hotels worth EUR 100.03 million were made last year which is 67.7% more than in 2020. Entertainment services accounted for €98.672 million last year, 1.5% less than in 2020.

Airline services were paid for at €48.521 million last year, which is 53.5% more than in 2020.
