Take note – story published 7 years ago

Telecom company LMT said March 21 it had opened the first high-speed '5G' communications base station in Latvia.

The move makes Latvia one of the first countries in Europe to boast 5G capability. It was installed at the Natural Sciences department of the university of Latvia in the Tornakalns suburb of Riga.

Opening the new base station, LMT president Juris Binde said more 5G stations would be opened across the country during the rest of the year.

Telecoms industry figures believe 5G will help usher in the next wave of online commerce and capabilities.

LMT teamed up with mobile infrastructure company Nokia on the project.
