The government has reserved gas owned by JSC “Latvijas Gāze” (LG) in the Inčukalns underground gas storage for households, the Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš said at the press conference after the government meeting on August 9.

He said that the gas currently in Inčukalns fully covers Latvia's needs during the next heating season. For additional safety, however, the government decided to reserve gas belonging to LG so that, in high market demand, the gas would not be sold further, but guaranteed to remain at the disposal of Latvian households.

Minister of Economics Ilze Indriksone (National Alliance) pointed out that the there are 1.15 terawatt hours of natural gas reserved in Inčukalns, needed for the consumption of related users during the new heating season. Gas is not purchased but reserved in the name of “Latvijas Gāze”, which is responsible for supplying related users with natural gas.

According to the Minister, Latvia's total consumption of natural gas in winter is 6.9 terawatt hours. The government continues to work with neighboring countries Estonia and Lithuania so that Latvia does not have a problem with natural gas adequacy in the new heating season, the Prime Minister added.
