Good, but not bumper harvest expected

Take note – story published 7 years ago

The total grain harvest this year is expected to reach 2.544 million tonnes - a very respectable harvest, yet not as large as last year's record 3.002 million tonnes, the Agriculture Ministry's Market and Direct Support Department told the LETA newswire Wednesday.

According to the Agriculture Ministry's data, although the total harvest this year will be not as good as originally anticipated, the average harvest per hectare will be record high - 44.9 quintals, compared to 34 quintals in 2015, 33.4 quintals in 2014 and 34.1 quintals in 2013.

Wheat will make up about 73 percent of the total grain harvest this year, which is about the same as usual.

On the other hand, grain price projections are not very hopeful and the prices are likely to be lower than last year due to good grain harvest in the entire European Union.

For instance, the wheat price in Latvia this past June was 26 percent lower than in May 2015 - €146.18 per tonne. This is 4 percent less than the EU average, 1 percent lower than in Lithuania, but 5 percent higher than in Estonia.
