The Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia on Friday will decide on EUR 50 000 contribution to the humanitarian aid program “Grains from Ukraine”, LETA reported November 25.

The UN World Food programs report that the world is experiencing the largest food crisis in modern history, as stated in the statement of the draft order prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A total of 49 million people in 49 states are already on the brink of hunger, says the statement.

The UN stresses that the unjustified invasion of Ukraine has serious consequences for global food security, particularly in countries with already existing food shortages and a significant volume of trade with Ukraine.

Ukraine has a large share of the global market for cereals and oilseeds. Ukraine supplies 10% of wheat, 13% of barley, 15% of corn on the world market, and is one of the most important producers of sunflower seed oil in the world, more than 50% of the world market.

In view of Ukraine's important role in the global food chain, a Black Sea Grains Initiative has been established within the UN, which resumed exports of Ukrainian grain and other food products through Ukrainian ports.

A number of donor countries, including the Baltic States, plan to announce their political and financial support for the program.

Latvia plans to provide financial support of EUR 50 000 for the “Grain from Ukraine” humanitarian program set up by Ukraine to tackle the global food crisis, to boost supplies of Ukrainian grain to African countries. The decision will be made Friday an at extraordinary cabinet meeting.
