Latvian retail trade turnover up on year in July

In news that might cause surprise to some, calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) and released August 28 show that, compared to July 2019, in July 2020 total retail trade turnover rose by 3.8 %. 

Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.7 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 4.4 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 6.8 %.

As compared to July 2019, the most notable turnover growth was registered in retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (of 27.1 %), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (12.3 %), and retail trade in pharmaceutical and medical goods (10.1 %). Turnover decline was registered in retail sale in stalls or markets (of 9.7 %) and retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (3.2 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 3.7 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to June, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in July 2020 fell by 0.9 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 2.2 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) did not change, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – fell by 0.5 %. However, compared to June, in July 2020 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 5.0 %.
