Latvia's hotel visitor figures show steady recovery from pandemic

According to the data published on November 15 by the Central Statistical Bureau, in September 2022 the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 196.3 thousand, which is 31.2 % more than in September 2021. 

As compared to September last year, the number of nights spent by visitors comprised 344.8 thousand, which is 30.7 % more.

112.4 thousand were foreign visitors, which is 57.2 % more than in September 2021. The number of nights spent by non-residents has increased by 56.5 % and comprised 206.8 thousand. In turn, the number of Latvian visitors hosted, compared to September 2021, rose by 7.4 % and comprised 84 thousand. The number of nights spent by residents has grown by 4.9 % and comprised 138 thousand.

In the nine months of this year, the number of visitors to Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 1.7 million, which is 64.4 % more than in the nine months of 2021. The number of nights spent by visitors has grown by 62.3 % and comprised 3.1 million nights. Out of all visitors hosted 883.5 thousand or 51.7 % were foreign visitors, but 826.4 thousand or 48.3 % were Latvian residents.

In the third quarter of 2022, the number of foreign and resident visitors in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 877.2 thousand, which is 32.5 % more than in the third quarter of 2021. As compared to the third quarter of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors has risen by 33.3 % and comprised 1.5 million nights. Visitors spent an average of 1.8 nights at tourist accommodation establishments.

In the third quarter the number of foreign visitors comprised 479.4 thousand, which is 82.7 % more than in the third quarter of the previous year. The number of nights spent by them has risen by 76.7 % and comprised 872.8 thousand. The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (107.4 thousand), Estonia (63.3 thousand), Germany (44.6 thousand), Finland (36.6 thousand), United Kingdom (25.2 thousand), Poland (19.1 thousand), Russia (17.8 thousand) and USA (16.6 thousand).

Out of foreign visitors 40.2 % or 192.9 thousand came from neighbouring countries – Lithuania (22.4 %), Estonia (13.2 %), Russia (3.7 %) and Belarus (0.9 %).

Most foreign visitors were hosted in Riga – 60.3 %, Jūrmala – 13.7 %, Liepāja – 4.2 %, Mārupe municipality – 2.7 % Ventspils – 2.6% and Sigulda municipality – 2.5 %.

In the third quarter of 2022 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 397.8 thousand Latvian residents, which is 0.4 % less than in the third quarter of 2021. Compared to a year ago, the number of nights spent by residents has grown by 1.2 % and comprised 676.3 thousand.

Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (17.5 %), Jūrmala (8.1 %), Cēsis municipality and Liepāja (5.7 %), Talsi municipality (5.3 %), Sigulda municipality (4.3 %), Kuldīga municipality and Ventspils (4.1 %).
