On Monday Ilze Cīrule, a former insurance industry executive, assumes office as head of the State Revenue Service. In the short term, the tax authority will focus on monitoring construction, transport, and online retail companies, Cīrule told LTV's Rīta Panorāma Monday.

In the transport industry, the tax service could focus on taxi cabs and used car sales, Cīrule said. She said that online retail is also an area where a lot of taxes are not paid.

The service will start implementing various initiatives and goals after two or three weeks when she has become familiar with the situation at the tax service, Cīrule said.

Cīrule confirmed that about 100 to 150 people are to be sacked from the State Revenue Service as reforms are carried out.

Cīrule was okayed by the government to become head of Latvia's tax service on November 8, more than five months after the resignation of previous director Ināra Pētersone.
